World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana booked their place at January's Africa Cup of Nations final when winning 2-0 against Sudan in Khartoum.
Sudan's first defeat of the Group I campaign means they are sweating on one of the two best runners-up spots.
First-half goals from Asamoah Gyan and Jonathan Mensah gave the Black Stars control. However, Isaac Vorsah's second- half dismissal for kicking out at an opponent ensured a nervy finish.
After six rounds, Ghana have 16 points in the group, three more than Sudan.
