Veteran Karuturi Sports striker Jacob Omondi and KCB midfielder Geoffrey Maina were the surprise nominees in the KPL Player of the Year shortlist released on Monday.
The season’s top scorer Stephen Waruru and Mathare United midfielder Kevin Kimani are also on the list that also includes Congo United playmaker Rama Salim and AFC Leopards midfielder Charles Okwemba.
The nominations were made by KPL coaches on Monday morning. The final voting for the winners of the Footballer of the Year Awards (FOYA) will be done on December 7; hours before the awards ceremony.
Gor Mahia keeper Jerim Onyango who was voted the second best goalkeeper last year is again nominated for the best custodian award.
Others nominated include: Sofapaka’s Duncan Ochieng who won it in 2008, Lawrence Webo of Rangers, Tusker’s Boniface Oluoch and Jacktone Odhiambo of Ulinzi.
Tusker duo of Joseph Shikokoti and Brian Mandela are among the nominees for the defender of the year award. Others include Mulinge Munandi of Ulinzi, Gor Mahia stopper Erica Masika and Rangers skipper Pascal Ochieng.
In the midfielder of the year categories, Charles Okwemba (AFC Leopards), Kevin Kimani (Mathare United), Collins Okoth (Gor Mahia), Rama Salim (Congo United) and Humphrey Mieno (Sofapaka) will fight it out for the best midfielder accolade.

Goalkeeper of the year: Lawerence Webo (Rangers), Duncan Ochieng (Sofapaka), Boniface Oluoch (Tusker), Jacktone Odhiambo (Ulinzi) and Fredrick Onyango(Gor Mahia)
