Flamengo have secured the services of Ronaldinho for an additional year, according to club's vice-president of finance.

The forward had not been paid by his employers for the past four months, but supremo Michel Levy announced that a compromise package has been met with Traffic, the company responsible for paying part of the Brazil international's contract.

"It is a gift from Santa Claus to give back to the fans," enthused Levy to AS.
"It is a very happy day for us. We worked hard and finally reached an agreement."

Also, a report in O Jogo states that the agreement is to be signed by Ronaldinho on Friday, according to which he will pledge his future to the Brazilians for the next season.

Reports linked the former Barcelona star with a move to Greece, but his agent Roberto de Assis dismissed the rumours, claiming his client and brother remained fully committed to Flamengo.

Mambo hayakutulia mpaka uchumba wetu ukavunjika.

Sikufahamu lolote nikamuuliza: wakusudia nini?

Abba Moro, Nigeria's interior minister, says the government intends to change its tactics in dealing with the Islamist sect Boko Haram, after the church bombings that killed 39 people on Christmas Day.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for Sunday's attacks, which included bomb explosions at two churches and a suicide attack in the northeast.

"I think strategising to curb the excesses of this sectarian group is not necessarily an issue of negotiations. What I mean is this government will change tactics to secure the lives of Nigerians," Moro said on Monday.

Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from Abuja, said security had been stepped up in the capital and in many other places, but Nigerians still had doubts about the ability of the government to deal with the situation.

"[Many Nigerians] feel that the security agencies are not up to the task. A lot of people are calling for a review of the security strategy and the security apparatus of government in the country," he said.

"The government promised to do its best to handle the situation, but so far this has not reassured Nigerians that everything is under control."

Protection demanded

Women returned to clean the blood from the scene of the first attack, the St Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a satellite town of Abuja, on Monday.

One man wept uncontrollably amid its debris as a Nigerian Christian association demanded protection for its churches.

Crowds gathered among the burnt-out cars in the church's dirt parking lot, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more of their places of worship.

Hundreds of residents sought to flee the violence-torn city of Damaturu, fearing further attacks and clashes between Islamists and the police, while about 30 Christian shops were burnt in the nearby city of Potiskum late on Sunday, the APF news agency reported.

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Islamic law across Nigeria.

The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings in 2011 alone, according to the AP news agency.

Abul Qaqa, a Boko Haram spokesperson, claimed responsibility for the bombings in a statement to a journalists' association in Maiduguri, capital of the group's heartland.

Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, speaking in Abuja on Sunday, denounced the church attacks, saying: "There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts."

Analysts say political considerations may have played a part in the government's thus-far muted response: Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

"The violence is increasing both in scale and sophistication," Shehu Sani, northern-based human rights activist, said.

"The attack on churches is [likely] to nationalise the crisis. It will instigate hitherto neutral people into the crisis."

As a result, he said, Christians may try to take revenge on Muslims. "This is dangerous for the country," Sani said.

Usikubali kushindwa, shetani akakuteka,
Utageuka mfungwa, wa shetani ni mateka,
Hapo umeshaangushwa, na imani kutoweka,
Mtihani Ukifika, Subira Inatakiwa.
Hapa nafunga baruwa, pengine mmeshachoka,

Tunaomba maridhawa, Mola Apate Ridhika,
Tunaomba kuepushwa, na madhambi kufutika,
Mtihani Ukifika, Subira Inatakiwa.

JIBU:

Barcelona star Lionel Messi says he is confident he will one day lift the FIFA World Cup trophy with Argentina.

The diminutive forward has often been criticised for his displays for his national squad, with many feeling the 24-year-old does not give his all at international level.

Pressure is mounting on Argentina, who have not won an official tournament since 1993, but Messi is confident things will soon change.

"A dream? To win the World Cup and the Copa America. That is what I am missing and I am convinced I will do it," Messi told the Argentine Football Association's magazine.

"I would be delighted to win a title with the national team. But it is clear I have nothing to prove, I have always been willing to help and it will always be like this."

"I do not feel I owe anything to anyone, let us make that very clear. I am simply one more player on this team who wants the best for Argentine football."

"Little by little, our team is growing." Messi described his Barcelona team as the strongest side in the world, and said comparisons with the Argentine squad were pointless.

"Honestly, you cannot compare, it is not worth it," he said.

"Barcelona have the best in the world."
"Those who support Barca, and those who do not, admit it. This is the result of many years of work with the same team-
mates."

"With Argentina, on the other hand, we have unfortunately not been able to achieve the results we wanted. There have been many coaches and we are starting from scratch."

Sudan's army has killed a key rebel leader from the western Darfur region, three days after anti-government forces said they had begun advancing on the capital Khartoum.

"The Sudanese army announce that they killed Khalil Ibrahim in fighting today west of Wadbanda in North Kordofan," the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) said on Sunday.

Ibrahim had headed the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), the most heavily armed group in the Darfur region, which the government had accused of being being behind earlier attacks.

On Saturday, the Sudanese army said JEM attacked three areas in North Kordofan state-adjacent to Darfur-killing an unspecified number of civilians.

Colonel Sawarmi Khalid Saad, an army spokesman, was quoted on Sudan's military website as saying the attacks targeted areas where security forces were not present, targeting local leaders and looting their property in the Umm-Gozain, Goz Abyadh and Aramal areas.

The death of Ibrahim and "a group of his leaders", if confirmed, could represent a serious blow to the rebel group, although tightly restricted access to Darfur and Sudan's other conflict zones makes it almost impossible to accurately gauge the real strength and internal unity of rebel groups.

The armed forces spokesman said Ibrahim and other leaders had been trying to enter South Sudan, which seceded from Sudan in July under a 2005 peace deal that ended a separate, decades-long civil war.

JEM spokesman Gibril Adam Bilal said on Thursday the group had reached En Nahud, about 120km east of Darfur in North Kordofan, on a mission to topple the regime led by President Omar al-Bashir.

"Ibrahim was of the Zaghawa tribe but his movement includes other tribes. He's even been supported by Islamists in Sudan," Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reported from Khartoum.

"But now that he's gone, we don't know if other leaders from JEM can keep support without help from other countries," our correspondent said, describing the loss of main JEM allies with the fall of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi and abandonment by Chad's leader, Idriss Deby.

Darfur conflict

In the past, JEM has launched attacks in Kordofan, about 700km west of Khartoum. They were also behind a 2008 attack in the capital.

In that incident, more than 222 people were killed when JEM guerrillas drove about 1,000km across the desert to Omdurman, just over the River Nile from the presidential palace.

Government troops repulsed them after heavy clashes and later sentenced dozens of rebels to death for their role in the assault.

In July, the government signed the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur with the Liberation and Justice Movement, an alliance of splinter rebel factions.

Darfur's main armed groups, JEM and factions of the Sudan Liberation Army headed by Minni Minnawi and Abdelwahid Nur, did not sign the deal.

Instead, along with the SPLM-North rebels, they last month ratified documents forming the new Sudanese Revolutionary Front dedicated to "popular uprising and armed rebellion" against the National Congress Party regime in Khartoum.

According to the UN at least 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur since 2003 when fighting broke out between non-Arab rebels and the Arab-dominated Khartoum regime. The government puts the death toll at 10,000.

UN officials say 1.9 million people are internally displaced and still living in camps in Darfur, with about 80,000 newly displaced by fighting this year.

Six people, including President Bashir, are being sought or are before the Hague-based International Criminal Court for crimes allegedly committed in the Darfur region.

Cuba will pardon more than 2,900 prisoners, the government said Friday, though U.S. subcontractor Alan Gross is not among those who will be freed.

The decision to release the prisoners follows "numerous requests" from their family members and religious institutions, and is a humanitarian gesture, said Cuban President Raul Castro.

Among those who might be freed are prisoners over the age of 60, along with those who are sick, female or young with no previous criminal record. With some exceptions, prisoners convicted of spying, terrorism, murder and drug trafficking will not be released.

Those who will be freed have already served a "important" part of their sentences and exhibited good behavior, according to an official statement published on the state-run website Cubadebate.

The jailed American, Gross, will not be among those pardoned, the Cuban Interests Section in Washington said.

Gross was jailed in December 2009, when he was working as a subcontractor on a U.S. Agency for International Development project aimed at spreading democracy.

Castro has accused him of importing satellite equipment to connect dissidents to the Internet, and this year Cuba's highest court upheld the 15-year sentence imposed on Gross for committing crimes against the security of the state.

He has maintained his innocence and said he was trying to help connect the Jewish community to the Internet.

Castro, speaking to the National Assembly, said that 86 prisoners from 25 countries would be among those released in coming days.

He cited the upcoming visit of Pope Benedict XVI as one of the motivations behind the move, which he said showed the "generosity and strength of the revolution."

The pope has said he plans to visit Mexico and Cuba before Easter.

In 2010, Castro agreed to free prisoners arrested during the 2003 crackdown on political dissidents. The Caribbean nation has released many of them, as well as other prisoners jailed for "counterrevolutionary" activities, ranging from hijacking to arson.

The slain South Sudan rebel leader, George Athor Deng, was masquerading as a Kenyan citizen, military sources in Juba have reported.

Athor had been travelling on a forged Kenyan passport (number A1760009) under the name of Samuel Otieno Ger when he was killed on Monday evening.

The passport reveals several anomalies and one wonders how he was able to use it. For instance, its presentation is of the old generation though it indicates that it was issued on November 23, 2011 in Nairobi and was due to expire in November 2012 when the new Kenyan passports have a 10-year lifespan.

Besides, passports currently being issued are the new generation type with several security features that are missing on the one found on Athor’s body.

It had only one watermarked photo of the holder when a genuine one should have two. Other watermark features differ significantly from those on a genuine one. It indicated that he was born on June 12, 1961 in Siaya.

Athor, who led the Southern Sudan Democratic Movement/Army, a splinter of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army, was shot dead in Central Equatoria State by government forces.

Reports in the Sudan Tribune newspaper quoted military sources in Juba as saying that further investigations would be conducted on how Athor obtained the passport.

Juba officials, who accuse Khartoum of supporting the rebel groups, suspect the passport was provided by the Sudanese intelligence to the renegade general.

Athor’s death came only days after the Juba national parliament approved a military action against his group, and exactly a month after he failed to reach a peace deal with a government delegation in Nairobi.

At least 25 people have been killed after an unknown person set off an explosive device outside a church in the Nigerian capital during Christmas Day celebrations, according to a relief worker.

A witness said a bomb had exploded in St Theresa church, but officials have not confirmed the cause of the blast.

The explosion tore through the church as worshippers gathered for Christmas services. Witnesses said windows of nearby houses had been shattered.

Security has been high after violence between Islamist gunmen and soldiers in northern Nigeria.

But the BBC's Fidelis Mbah in Lagos says no trouble had been expected in the capital.

As Muslims who live in the West, we find ourselves surrounded by a culture of capitalism which utilizes anything in its means to further its spread and acceptance. Amid this culture is the widespread acceptance of the 25th of December being the birthday of Jesus Christ. However, as Pastors and Priests of the Christian faith have accepted over the years, this is an erroneous claim.

Nevertheless they have continued to re-enact the nativity in their churches and narrate stories surrounding it which clearly demonstrates both their lack of desire for the truth and the way in which they easily accept falsehood and implement it into their religion.

Additionally, there is a phenomenon among a number of Muslims to partake in the Christmas festivities where they erect Christmas trees and exchange gifts.

Ignorantly they have assumed that Christmas is typically associated with nationalism rather than theology, and in their fervent desire to assimilate into a British identity they feel obliged to get involved. However, as this article aims to demonstrate, Christmas is deeply theological and additionally, based in pagan and not Christian beliefs.

Christmas, also known as Christ's Mass, is arguably the most popular celebration that takes place in the West. It is an annual holiday which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ on the 25th of December.

Generally, festivities are combined with both secular and pagan customs and begin on the 24th of December until after Boxing Day (26th of December). For a long time people have assumed that Christmas Day is the actual day of the birth of Jesus Christ, however, there is much proof to the contrary which is found in the bible and the books of history.

A close reading of the New Testament provides no specific date for the birth of Jesus. Additionally, only two gospels of the four actually narrate the nativity story although both apparently contradict each other.

The Gospel of Luke describes how the archangel Gabriel came to Mary to inform her of a son to be born to her. She responded that she was a virgin to which the angel then stated 'nothing will be impossible with God' to which she replied 'here I am the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according with the Lord's word.'

1. Whilst pregnant, Mary and her husband traveled to Bethlehem to register for a national census. Having found no room at an inn, they lodged in the barn.

Meanwhile an angel appeared to some shepherds nearby and informed them of Jesus' birth whilst at that moment a 'heavenly host' appeared to them and said 'Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.'

2. Based on the accounts in Luke of the shepherds' activities, the time of year depicted for Jesus' birth could possibly be either spring or summer thus contradicting the notion that Christ was born in winter.

The Gospel of Matthew narrates a different version of events, and relates that the 'good news' was told to Joseph (and not Mary) in a dream, after which he fled with his family to Egypt seeking safety from Herod.

Matthew also included the story of the foreign magi (three wise men) although Luke mentions shepherds who are guarding their flock nearby. These contradictions are clearly apparent and have clearly confused most Christians as there is no clear narration detailing Christ's birth, to the extent that most Christians are ignorant of the fact that Jesus is narrated as having traveled to Egypt in the early part of his life.

Although there is a possibility of reconciling the two narrations by means of combining the two stories, it seems extremely questionable that Luke fails to mention the Maji, and Matthew the 'heavenly host.'

Thus we see many nativity plays which differ from one another where Christians randomly pick and choose events which they believe will increase the entertaining value of the play.

Real Madrid striker Kaka has emerged as Paris Saint-Germain's chief target in the January transfer window.

The affluent club from the French capital indulged in a summer of intense spending, capturing Javier Pastore for 33.5 million pounds from Palermo as their crown jewel.

A similar spree is envisaged next month, and already PSG have been associated with Porto's Hulk and Carlos Tevez of Manchester City, among others. However, it is Kaka who is top of their shopping list, according to Le Parisien newspaper.

Head coach Antoine Kombouare is set to be pushed aside by the Parc des Princes outfit, and the French media strongly suggest that Carlo Ancelotti will be their next coach.

The Italian has a strong link with Kaka from their time together at AC Milan, during which the Brazilian picked up the Ballon d'Or after leading his side to the 2006-07 Champions League crown.

Kaka has not enjoyed such fortune since moving to Spain. Injury and a loss of form have hampered the 29-year-old, who is believed to be valued at 33.5m pounds, and accordingly he has fallen behind Mesut Ozil in the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu.

PSG have many historic ties to Brazil, with Rai and Ronaldinho both still icons and Nene presently starring in the starting team while Ceara plays a key role as well, and Kaka could help continue that tradition as they look to add depth to their squad.

Despite this, they lead Ligue 1 by three points over second-placed Montpellier.

Syria's deputy foreign minister says 30 people have been killed in two suicide car bomb explosions in the capital, Damascus, ahead of calls by anti-government activists for fresh protests across the country.

At least 100 other people were wounded in Friday's attack, which targeted two security facilities in the Kfar Sousa district, Faisal Mukdad said.

Investigations indicated that an al-Qaeda armed group may have been responsible for the attack, according to state media.

"Several soldiers and a large number of civilians were killed in the two attacks carried out by suicide bombers in vehicles packed with explosives against bases of State Security and another branch of the security services," Syrian Television said.

It aired footage of damaged buildings and dead bodies being transferred to ambulances. Syria has portrayed the nine-month uprising in the country as the work of "terrorist" extremists and armed gangs.

Al Jazeera's Rula Amin, reporting from neighbouring Lebanon, said the blasts marked the first such attack in the Syrian capital since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

"The capital has been relatively quiet. If the government is trying to say this is the work of protesters or even al-Qaeda sympathisers, the attack is in the heart of the capital and that makes the government look very vulnerable," she said.

In another part of Syria, activists reported the death of eight people in the central city of Homs, where they said government forces fired at protesters leaving Omar Mosque in Jandali neighbourhood.

Kenya Defence Force killed a top commander of Al Shabaab and 18 members of his militia in two air strikes in Somalia close to the Kenyan border.

Separate reports from the battlefront said KDF on Tuesday also fought the fierce battle in Busar town on Tuesday night to save Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government forces from annihilation by Al Shabaab groups fighting to evict them from one of their former camps in Busar.

Both the air strikes in Hosingo and the rescue mission in Busar by KDF were part of the engagement in the field revealed in Nairobi by the military spokesman and reported by The Standard field crew in Somalia.

The military broke the news of the air strikes in Hosongo town as a confidential Government security status report went into circulation showing the militia has sent assassins to Kenya to hunt down Defence Minister Yusuf Haji and Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim.

"We have received information a group of Al Shabaab operatives were dispatched from Lower Juba in Somalia to Ijara and Lagdera constituencies on December 13, with a brief to assassinate Defence Minister Yusuf Haji and Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim," states the report signed by Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia.

In the letter, Kimemia further states the militant group dispatched some unidentified explosive experts from Buale in Somalia to attack Habaswein and Elwak markets on an undisclosed date.

In the letter copied to Haji and Farah, Kimemia advises North Eastern PC James ole Serian to ensure security officers are vigilant to stop such attempts.

"Al Shabaab appears determined to continue pursuing targets in Kenya,’’ said Kimemia in the letter dated December 15.

It also emerged that on Wednesday the Chief of Defence of Forces General Julius Karangi and Army Commander Lt-General Joseph Kasaon made a surprise whistle-stop landing in the battlefront in Somalia to meet, listen to, and encourage the field troops. It was their first visit since the operation started in October.

Arsenal's Boxing Day match with Wolves at the Emirates Stadium has been postponed by 24 hours due to the London tube strikes.

The Premier League fixture will now be played on December 27 to avoid potential disruption caused by the industrial action which was scheduled for the same day.

The strike is the subject of a legal appeal by London Underground bosses and so may not go ahead, but Arsenal require a longer 'preparation period' in order to ensure the safety of supporters, according to the club's official website.

The match on the new date will kick-off at 3pm.

Chelsea's meeting with Fulham at Stamford Bridge has also been thrown into doubt as a result of the planned strike action.

A wave of apparently co-ordinated bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, has killed at least 63 people and injured around 185, say officials.

The interior ministry told the BBC 14 locations had been attacked, including al-Amil in the south and Halawi and Karrada closer to the centre.

The bombings are the worst in months - and follow the withdrawal of US troops. They come amid fears of rising sectarian tensions as the unity government faces internal divisions.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks. However, analysts say the level of co-ordination suggests a planning capability only available to the Sunni insurgent group, al-Qaeda in Iraq.

A security spokesman in Baghdad, Major General Qassim Atta, said the attackers had not aimed at security targets. "They targeted children's schools, day workers and the anti-corruption agency," he told the AFP news agency.

Raghad Khalid, a teacher at a kindergarten in Karrada, said all their windows had been blown out. "The children were scared and crying. Some parts of the car bomb are inside our building."

Smoke was seen rising over Karrada district, with ambulances rushing to the scene.

Another woman said her baby had been covered in glass. "She is now scared in the next room. All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?" said Um Hanin.

Political turmoil Iraq's year-old power-sharing government is in turmoil after an arrest warrant was issued for Sunni Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi on terror charges.

The entire al-Iraqiyya group, the main Sunni bloc in parliament, is boycotting the assembly in protest. It accuses Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, a Shia, of monopolising power.

Mr Hashemi denies the charges. He is currently in Irbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, under the protection of the regional government, but Mr Maliki has demanded that they give him up.

A BBC correspondent in the region, Jim Muir, says in the current heated political climate many Shias will see the bomb attacks as Sunni acts of revenge for the charges Mr Hashemi faces.

The last American troops departed from Iraq on Sunday, nearly nine years after the war that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

President Barack Obama acknowledged that the situation was not perfect, but said the US forces were leaving behind "a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government elected by its people".

The last edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking for this year brings very few changes with it.

World and European champions Spain remain unchallenged at the top of the table, followed by the Netherlands, Germany and Uruguay, who are all still competing in an exciting head-to-head battle for second place.

As the top team at year-end, Spain are the Team of the Year for the fourth year in a row. The title of Best Mover of the Year is claimed by Wales (48th, up 2) who, with 330 points, won the most points in 2011.

The Welshmen find themselves back in the top 50 thanks to their outstanding performances in the second half of the year, with wins over Montenegro, Switzerland and Bulgaria in the EURO 2012 qualifiers.

December saw the following teams achieve their highest position ever since the introduction of the world ranking: Bosnia-Herzegovina (20th, up 3), Panama (49th, up 2), Estonia (57th, up 1) and American Samoa (186th, up 18), who claimed their first-ever win in a World Cup qualifying match.

A comparison with the continental composition of the top 50 in December 2010 reveals various changes: South America (9 teams, up 3), CONCACAF (3, up 1) and Asia (4, up 1) have grown stronger, while Africa (7, down 3) and Europe (27, down 2) have fewer teams in the top 50 than they had a year ago.

The top-ranked teams from each of the confederations are Spain (1st), Uruguay (4th), Côte d’Ivoire (16th), Japan (19th), Mexico (21st) and New Zealand (119th).

The results of 57 new 'A' international matches have been recognised in the current edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, of which 51 were friendly matches and the remaining six were OFC World Cup qualification matches.

In total, 1,046 matches were taken into account over the course of the year. The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Ranking will be published on 18 January 2012.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) predicts international cricket will return to the country in 2012.

Pakistan have played all their matches overseas since the terrorists attacked the Sri Lanka team in Lahore in 2009.

But PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has invited Bangladesh to tour, and said: "I am confident that international cricket will be revived in Pakistan."

The United Arab Emirates will host Pakistan's home series against England in the new year. England will play three Tests, four one-day internationals and three Twenty20 games in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Ashraf discussed hosting the Tigers with Bangladesh Cricket Board president Mustafa Kamal last week, and a security team from Bangladesh will visit Pakistan in January, ahead of a potential tour in April.

"It's like breaking the ice," Ashraf added.
"They will be meeting with top security officials of our government. We want to remove this security fear."

"Even if [Bangladesh] play two or three matches, it will send positive signals to the cricketing community around the world."

Six police officers and a driver were killed, and several players and officials injured, when gunmen opened fire on the Sri Lanka team bus on its way to the Gaddafi Stadium for the third day of the second Test.

All 27 of Pakistan's Tests and their 67 one-day internationals since the terror attacks have been played on foreign soil, and the World Cup games scheduled to be staged in the country earlier this year were moved for security reasons.

The UAE has served as Pakistan's temporary home, although Lord's and Headingley hosted two Tests against Australia in 2010.

Sri Lanka players were airlifted away following the Lahore terror attack in 2009 Even if [Bangladesh] play two or three matches, it will send positive signals to the cricketing community around the world.

An explosion near the world's largest refugee camp in Kenya has killed at least one policeman, police say.

Two other officers were wounded when a suspected roadside bomb detonated near the Dadaab camp, Reuters news agency reports.

The camp houses about 450,000 people who have fled famine and conflict in Somalia.

Kenya has sent troops to Somalia to pursue militant Islamists it blames for a recent wave of abductions.

The Islamist group al-Shabab said the Kenyan incursion was an act of war and it would take revenge.

'Vehicle destroyed'

Dadaab deputy police chief Nelson Kaliti said one policeman was killed in the blast, Reuters says.

A private security officer, who declined to be named, said two other policemen were wounded, it reports.

"We heard an explosion and on our arrival saw the vehicle ripped in two. The front part of the wreckage was lying on top of the mutilated body of the driver," the officer is quoted as saying.

"Two other badly wounded policemen were pulled out of the wreckage," he said.

The BBC's Bashkas Jugsodaay in the capital, Nairobi, says Dadaab residents told him there is a heavy security force presence at the camp, and police have even sealed off the hospital.

Two Spanish women working for the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Dadaab were kidnapped in October.

Somalia has not had a functioning central government for more than 20 years and has been wracked by fighting.

Three Somali areas are currently suffering famine conditions, the UN says.

Italian police have arrested 17 people in connection with a match-fixing and betting investigation. Those arrested include former Atalanta and Italy midfielder Cristiano Doni.

The arrests were carried out in several cities in Italy after an initial investigation by magistrates in the northern city of Cremona.

Those arrested and accused of match-fixing had contacts with criminal groups in Singapore and Eastern Europe, according to police. The investigation was a follow-up to a previous one earlier this year by the football authorities, which led to suspensions and bans for several players, including Doni.

According to police, several other players and former players from the second division (Serie B) were also arrested, as well as the manager of a seaside club and a former trainer of fourth division Ravenna.

Atalanta matches in Serie B were among those under suspicion, although three Serie A matches involving other clubs from the same period were also investigated by the operation, named 'Last Bet'.

Doni, 38, played for Italy at the 2002 World Cup Has played nearly 300 games for Atalanta, scoring more than 100 goals. Made seven appearances for Italy between 2001-02.

As issues of immigration and integration raise Europe's political temperature, this three- part series examines the history of Muslim immigration to France- a country where debate continues to rage over how to reconcile a long-standing tradition of secularism with religious diversity.

Today, there are an estimated five million Muslims living in France. A century ago, they were referred to as "colonials". During the 1960s, they were known as "immigrants". Today, they are "citizens".

But how have the challenges facing each generation of immigrants changed?

The first part of the series tells the story of the 5,000 Muslims who by 1904 were working on the shop floors of Paris, in the soap factories of Marseilles and in the coalfields of the north; of the Muslim soldiers who fought and died for France during the First World War; and the Muslim members of the resistance who helped liberate Paris in 1944.

Born as North Africans, many would die for France. But how much did post-war France care about their sacrifices?

It also says it's entitled to claim their assets as forfeitable under US money laundering laws. (AP)

Francesco Totti has moved to reassure Roma by stating that he has no intention of leaving the Italian capital.

The former Italian international revealed on Wednesday that he was considering turning his back onhis hometown club because of criticism from the press and certain sections of the Stadio Olimpico crowd in their 1-1 draw with Juventus on Monday.

However, Totti, speaking ahead of this weekend's clash with Napoli, has revealed that he is going nowhere.

"I can confirm that I have been insulted on the street, (by people) who were not fans of Lazio, but I can calm the situation: I will stay at Roma," Totti told Sky Sport Italia.

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini also dismissed the possibility of Totti ever leaving Roma.

"I like it when a player tells everyone how he feels," he claimed. "He’s a spontaneous kind of guy, he was hurt but the criticism will spur him on. I’m almost pleased."

"Totti will never leave Roma, he is Roma, and we want him to stay with us for life. Once he ends his playing career then he will take up a director’s role with us."

Totti, who missed a penalty in the stalemate with Juventus, made his Roma debut as a 16-year-old in 1992 and has now made 481 appearances for the Romans.

Barcelona have coasted through to a FIFA Club World Cup final date with Santos, although the European champions’ resounding 4-0 victory over Al-Sadd at the Yokohama International Stadium was overshadowed by a serious injury to striker David Villa.

The former Valencia star suffered a broken leg towards the end of the first half and will now miss around six months of football, starting with Sunday’s showdown against Neymar and Co.

Villa’s injury aside, this was as problem-free a match as Barcelona will enjoy all season, with Al-Sadd unable to offer much resistance to a team evidently in an entirely different class. Yet this was a night on which the star men took a back seat as some unlikely goalscorers stepped forward, with Adriano grabbing a double before Seydou Keita and Maxwell rounded off a thoroughly convincing win.

It was certainly no surprise that Barça pinned their Qatari opponents in their own half from the outset, with the crowd buzzing in anticipation every time Lionel Messi received the ball.

The little Argentinian was generally subdued during a one-sided first half, but the fans were offered an early glimpse Messi magic when he twisted away from a couple of Al-Sadd after nine minutes only to see his left-footed effort charged down.

Al-Sadd had set out to defend in depth, with their midfield sitting extremely deep in an attempt to reduce the space in which Barça famously love to work. It looked to be working too and yet, having kept Barça at bay so resolutely, they very nearly gifted the European champions an 18th-minute opener.

Ibrahim Abdulmajed was the offender, delaying too long on an attempted clearance that was charged down and sent into the path of David Villa. Clean through, the Spain international struck his right foot shot well enough but goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr–a hero of Al-Sadd’s win over Esperance-spared his team-mate’s blushes with a fine save low to his right.

The Qataris would not be so lucky seven minutes later though, and on this occasion Saqr was at least partially to blame for a calamitous mix-up.

Nadir Belhadj was the other, arguably guiltier party, with the Algerian left-back needlessly volleying the ball back to his keeper from a Pedro cross. Unable to handle the back-pass without conceding a free-kick, Saqr attempted to get the ball out of his feet to clear, but succeeded only in booting it against the shins of Adriano, from which the ball rebounded back into the Al-Sadd net.

The goal was no more than Barça deserved for their early dominance, and they had the ball in the net again after 34 minutes only for Villa’s opportunistic effort to be ruled out, correctly, for offside.

A couple of minutes later, disaster struck for the same player when he was stretchered from the field after landing awkwardly as he attempted to get a shot in on goal. A club statement later confirmed what worrying TV replays had suggested: that Villa had suffered a broken tibia.

The loss of their team-mate didn’t knock Barça off their stride though, and with two minutes to go until half-time they doubled their advantage. Adriano was the unlikely hero once again, and this time there was no luck involved as he cut in from the left on to a reverse pass from Thiago and rifle an excellent left-foot shot beyond the helpless Saqr. Even with most of the match still to play, it looked to be game, set and match to Pep Guardiola’s men.

However, Al-Sadd did provide a warning to the European champions in first-half stoppage time when Kader Keita bustled his way through the Barça rearguard only to fire over at the end of a purposeful solo run.

The one-way traffic towards the Qataris’ goal resumed in the second half though, with Andres Iniesta seeing a ferocious right-foot drive charged down by Ibrahim Abdulmajed, and Saqr producing a brilliant flying save to tip away Messi’s goal-bound free-kick.

Nonetheless, the Barça No10 was becoming steadily more influential, and on 63 minutes he produced a superb defence-splitting pass t lay on his team’s third.

Seydou Keita was the beneficiary, with the Malian midfielder controlling instantly before flicking a left-foot shot beyond the advancing Saqr. And there was still time for salt to be applied to Al-Sadd’s wounds, with Maxwell adding a fourth goal with nine minutes remaining.

Not for the first time, the impressive Thiago provided the vision, threading through an incisive reverse pass that was matched by the powerful left-foot shot the Brazilian substitute sent flashing just inside the near post.
