Nigeria coach quits top job

Nigeria Olympic team coach Austin Eguavoen has resigned after failing to qualify for the London 2012 Games.

The team lost two group games and won their last against Algeria in the CAF Under-23 Championship in Morocco, but it was not enough to keep them in the race for an Olympics ticket.

In a letter to the Nigeria Football Federation, former international defender Eguavoen said it was only honourable for him to resign after failing the nation and the terms of his contract.

"I'm so sorry I couldn't make it. I think it's just honourable for me to resign after failing to meet the set targets," he wrote.

It capped a disastrous year for Nigerian football as they failed to qualify for January's Africa Cup of Nations, the male and female Olympics football tournament as well as the All Africa Games that was held in September.
